Retyped by Michael Pantlin (1948-) from notes from Gladys Lizette Augusta Pantlin-Handley (1921-1996)
Family History of Joseph Starie Handley 1860-1947
He was born at Coreley on the Clee Hill in Salop. His mother Anne Handley was a maid at the large farmhouse of the Staries and he was born from a union with the son, but his mother chose to be independent and would not marry the son. Her mother was a herbalist or "doctor". The Starie's were reckoned to have come from France with William the Conqueror. Mr. Starie managed two farms, the "Hem" and the "Batch" near Ludlow. He eventually married but died alone in fairly poor conditions as he was said to be miserly.
Joseph took his mother's name and lived with his grandmother. His mother eventually married a Mr. Dolphin, an Evangelist and they had a shop on the Clee Hill, by the church. She died aged 74. My father recalled his visits with tender affection and love of the scenery. Joseph was sent to Coreley private school, then as an apprentice carpenter for seven years in Shrewsbury. He qualified at 21. He became a member of the Plymouth Brethren and made public speeches in Shrewsbury. He enjoyed a lot of fishing. He became a journeyman joiner and met his wife, Anne Done, at Werg's Hall. She was a lady's maid to Mrs. Thorneycroft there and she did the sewing. In those days she took her sewing machine to the big houses. They married about 1886 and set up a chandlers shop helped by the Dones of Wolverhampton. Mr. Done was a bailiff and joiner in Wolverhampton. He had several businesses. All the Dones had trades. Anne came from a family of 12. After about four years they went to Cherry Orchard, Shrewsbury where the first three children were born. Annie, John and Mabel. J.S.H. then tried insurance but did not do well. Everyone was going to Liverpool for jobs so they went, walking a lot of the way. Mary and Joe were born at Ashbridge St. Liverpool. J.S.H. went into carpentry, making furniture. Rent was 7/6 a week. The next move was to Alderson Rd, then to Tabley Rd, then Barrington Road and finally to Langdale Road, Sefton Park. J.S.H. was now working for Morrisons who were employed for the new Protestant Cathedral where his work is extant. Previously he had worked for Cunard on the ships and when they sailed he would temporarily be out of work, with no pay. He carved the pulpit in a Wavertree church. He did not have work after aged 62. His wife died Jan. 1922, after a road accident. His eldest son was married in 1920 and in 1921 his wife died at the birth of their first child (me).
J.S.H. was a strong socialist. He was very strict in the family, they were not allowed to visit friends. Husband and wife were somewhat incompatible as J.S.H. was reserved, somewhat mean and had a violent temper, thrashing the children at times. His wife was talkative and unreliable timewise. J.S.H. rode a penny-farthing. He used to enjoy swimming and then going to the pub on a Sunday morning.
I knew him in his seventies as mild, kindly and intelligent with a very good memory. He loved poetry which he used to recite. The history is written as related to me by my A. Mary who was the youngest daughter when in her eighties.

Additional findings:
rdrbrdrsrdrw30rsp20 From CuriousFoX: I have through my grandmother links to the Starie family. A branch of the Starie family came from around Tenbury, they used to own a house called The Hemm. The name is also spelt as Starey. The Hemm was apparently sold in around 1928 following thedeath of John Starie. I would be interested in any photos of the Hemm any information on any Starie family still in the area.
--------------------------------------------------------------
At time of 1881 Census Joseph Stary was unmarried, a wheelwright living as a boarder at 4 Wergs, Tettenhall, Coreley, Shropshire.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
At time of 1871 Census a Joseph S. Handley lived with Maria Stinton and Elizabeth Handley.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The "Batch Farm"is probably the current "Bache Farm" in Coreley, UK
