My mum had very little education and, in that sense, was a disappointment to my grandmother. I think the other siblings were not much better academically. By her own account, she was rebellious and unmotivated. In desperation my grandmother sent her privately to Liverpool Collegiate school but she managed to leave early, I think at 13, probably when she was evacuated to Anglesey. She trained as a Pitman shorthand-typist and then worked as a secretary. When they moved to London she worked in the War Office until I was born. She went back to work part-time when I was about 10, and became a self-taught accounts clerk. Later she went full-time and for many years worked as cashier and accounts clerk for British Telecommunications Research (later Plessey) in Taplow. She retired in her late 50's when undiagnosed thyroid deficiency made work difficult. She did a bit of freelance accounting for various local organizations and eventually the thyroid problem was diagnosed and treated (years too late).

She always had cats and, after we left home, a lot of them. I would guess that most of her disposable income for many of her later working years was spent on feeding, rescuing and re-homing feral cats in Maidenhead. We still have the last one from Shropshire, Zachary, inherited as a young cat on her death in 2013 and now an influential member of our family!

Audrey married Thomas (Tom) James Davy, son of Living and Living, on 25 Dec 1943 in West Derby, Liverpool, England. (Thomas (Tom) James Davy was born on 4 Oct 1916 in Holloway, London, England and died on 13 Jul 2001 in Bury St. Edmunds, England.)
