Roger Davies remembers that Uncle Jack worked for Nestlι. He had an open-top car in which he drove Roger and his sisters to Southport. They sang in the back of the car.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Audrey Davies remembers that "he had a car in those days because he was a commercial traveller with Nestles. However he had an accident on a dark night in which a pedestrian was killed and, after that, he apparently never drove again."

Michael Pantlin : In later life in Droitwich , Jack enjoyed gardening. He had a large garden with a pond, lawn , flower-beds, vegetable patch, fruit bushes, fruit trees, and a wild area with tall trees that he called the 'jungle'. Two outsides served to store fruit in winter and house garden tools.

Tony Davy: Uncle Jack had a car-accidnet (not his fault), killed someone, and never drove since.

bullet  Medical Notes:

From his letter to his daugther, written 1 November 1970:

Mine is no ordinary liver upset, very rare and serious. It is grossly enlarged and is now occupying half of my stomach crowding all the other organs. It is still growing, and will determined my end. It also starves the body of nutriment hence my weakened physical and mental condition. I have to keep the body stretched to avoid cramping so only bed is really comfortable. The doctor said that I'd never dig again. Any gardening will be very very light so there is no hope of improvement and I suppose from now on I will just fade away. On top of all it has ruined my sight. The blurred vision and has intensified so even this letter-writing is tiring and straining. Have to take rests after short spells. Apparently I have worked myself to death.
