bullet  Medical Notes:

Note on a scrap of paper sent from John Starie Handley (b. 1891) to daughter Gladys. Note was attached to a letter dated 21/6/1962.
" Personal.
I suppose you know that Monday 3rd July is the anniversary of your Mother's death from puerperal fever. I have never been able to find the cause of this. Some have said from unhygenic treatment at birth but Dr Roberts across the road on the new estate said it was a virus and the cause was unknown. But Drs wont tell us' lay' people the truth. I was in Wales, Newtown Montgomery when I got the letter from Gran of your birth and that everything was O.K. I rushed home on the Thurs. and had the shock of my life when I saw your Mother. I ordered ' other opinion' and a specialist from Rodney Gr. came and said "nothing to worry about" - on the Sat. Can you believe them? Two days only later she passed away. Surely that man lied to me - yet took his fee."
