Christmas card from the trenches

During the Great War my grandfather Jack Handley was in the trenches in France and Belgium. The soldiers were provided with Christmas cards to send to family back home.

This card Jack sent to his brother Joe is very depressing to me. There is no warmth in it. I suppose the soldiers felt so bad about not being home for Christmas that even sending a card was painful to think about.
