Keep in the flow

I have the bad habit of stopping my writing to do more research. While writing I think of new scenes, like the social context of the times. I find it difficult to resist digging in and getting side-tracked.

My teacher, Lynn, says it’s best to keep writing your first draft and stay in the flow. Just make notes in the text about doing research later. The first draft of a story is never complete or perfect. Get the main story out and then go back to fill in gaps. Keep in the flow.

Another habit which takes too much time is to keep improving the wording while writing. That is better done later, in the editing phase.

The clock is ticking and there’s so much to do: writing, writers’ course, website, facebook page, plus daily life!
