Protagonist and antagonist

In every good story the main character (protagonist) is confronted with someone or something to fight against (antagonist). The conflict between the two provides action, drama and emotion to the story.

A Writing Challenge exercise was to identify the antagonist. I’ve done that for Jack Handley’s life story (Jack was my maternal grandfather).

Throughout Jack’s life he had a number of antagonists:
– as a teenager: his father
– during the Great War: the Hun (Germans)
– after the war: medical doctors and alcohol
– in 1930’s: the Great Depression
– during WW2: the London Blitz
– after WW2: his own daughter
– in retirement: society at large.
